Java Application Code Now Open Sourced

"I want to put one nagging item to rest. By admitting that one of the strongest motivations to select the GPL (Gnu Public License, chosen by Sun for the Open Source version of Java software) was the announcement made last week by Novell and Microsoft, suggesting that free and open source software wasn't safe unless a royalty was being paid. As an executive from one of those companies said, 'free has to have a price.' That's nonsense," said Sun President, Jonathan Schwartz.

At Sun, free means free. Open source software makes the Solaris OS the safe, strategic choice for commercial and development use. You can learn more about Sun's commitment to the Open Source community and how it opens doors for you in this month's edition of Tech Corner.

In May of 2006 Sun took a big step. They promised to theTech Corner audience at the JavaOne conference and the global Java development community that they would open source Sun's implementation of the Java technology platform. In the pursuing months, Sun has disclosed crucial details about their open source Java software program progress. And they have addressed the most important question of all - Why open source the Java application code now? Read More.

OpenMoko, the true revolution head on against iPhone with open standards...

Just a Wow! I am left speechless!

This is something that follows a paradigm painfully different from the one of Apple, pretty much completely opposite of it actually. This phone rivals Apple's iPhone as a technological concept and is yet based on completely open technologies, fully extensible by anyone and fully under control of its user.

Want to know why having an open standards based phone is cool? check here.

The rough specifications are available here.
You can see a feature comparison with the iPhone here.

Windows-Based Installer for Ubuntu!

Finally, out of the box, there's work going on to make a Windows-based installer for a Linux distro! This has been started with Ubuntu and a prototype version is already available! This will take all the distro makers by storm and i bet within a short span of time all distros will ship a windows based installer in addition to what they currently provide like they did years ago to catch up with the Live CD buzz!

RAILGUN - Inspired by QUAKE!

Do you remember an awesome weapon called RAIL GUN from all those FPS games you played? I do. I loved fragging my opponents into ashes with a single shot of my rail gun in quake death matches.

Recently found from engadget that US Navy is getting real personal with a realized version of the pixelated rail gun we all love and adore!

Checkout the article here.

A MBA and an Engineer - Could not resist posting this... too good...

A MBA and an Engineer go on a camping trip, set up their tent, and fall asleep. Some hours later, the Engineer wakes his MBA friend.

"Look up at the sky and tell me what you see The MBA replies, "I see millions of stars."

The Engineer asks "What does that tell you?"

The MBA ponders for a minute:
"Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.

Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three.

Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.

Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

What does it tell you?"

The Engineer friend is silent for a moment, and then speaks.
"Practically. ..Someone has stolen our tent".
